Environmental press work and advocacyI am passionate about the natural world, and am committed to helping protect habitat and supporting those who campaign to protect it.
I have had excellent results in working on projects such as the Cambrian Mountains Society’s campaign to raise the profile of its bid to gain Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) status for this stunning area – described by naturalist and TV presenter, Iolo Williams, as precious beyond measure, as this is ‘Wales’ last true wilderness. I also work with Gwent Wildlife Trust on the campaign to halt significant development in the region until full, formal protection is achieved. Having faced down the M4 motorway, new development proposals now loom. I chair Cardiff Civic Society, spearheading campaigns to enhance urban biodiversity and save green spaces for both people and wildlife. This has resulted in the local authority identifying more than 40 new no-mow areas within the city, as well as shifting to a more nature-friendly planting ethos. There’s still a long way to go, but my motto is ‘keep on keeping on’. I have also been involved with campaign groups working towards influencing the various Replacement Local Development Plans by challenging growth figures, putting forward candidate sites to be protected for nature, and lobbying MSs and council members, both salaried and elected.
